Madonna's "W.E." is inspired by the love story of Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII. The UK King abdicated his throne to marry the twice-divorced American, saying "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility, and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love." The film uses a modern-day flashback technique to examine possibilities of some of the less fairytale-like aspects of the relationship.
Madonna's original song "Masterpiece" presents one problem inherent in the high visibility posh lifestyle, that of being on display like a work of art. The song won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, but it wasn't eligible for an Oscar because it appeared too late in the closing credits to be allowed.
Madonna, Jimmy Harry, and Julie Frost composed this masterpiece.
