West End critics are raving about "Matilda the Musical", winner of the most Olivier Awards won by a single show (7) in the 2012 awards, including Best New Musical. Good news for Broadway fans: the show is coming to New York in Spring 2013. Mark your calendar now because according to the London Guardian, "You'd be a nitwit to miss this show."
Matilda the Musical is based on "Matilda" the popular children's book by Roald Dahl. Matilda is a precocious naughty-but-lovable five-year-old with special powers. She is unappreciated by her parents and the school headmistress, but her talents are recognized by her kind teacher Miss Honey. Here Matilda, the other schoolchildren, and Miss Honey lament their difficult current situations and look forward to a better future in "When I Grow Up". (This clip has lyrics and audio from the cast album created by the Stratford preview cast. Distracted by the incorrect spelling of the lyrics? The kids are only five!)
Here is a clip from the London Olivier Award-winning cast singing Naughty in a Great Show Tunes Bonus. The foursome of children, Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram, Eleanor Worthington Cox, and Sophia Kiely together won the Olivier for Best Actress. Imagine what they'll be doing on the stage in ten or twenty years!
Australian composer/lyricist Tim Minchin is so creative that the London Times says this, "Tim Minchin's lyrics, to his own music, are so good that the temptation to write them down could, at any point, make you miss some extraordinary sight." This second Great Show Tunes Bonus captures some of the creative wit and wisdom from Minchin, whose day-job is stand-up comic.
